Total Blog Newbie

Hello, My name is Kathryn Belanger of Silver’s Glow Photography. This is my first ever blog. I’m excited and scared all at once. This is something that I’ve been thinking about doing for some time now. What better time to start then the day after my 38th birthday and the Autumn Equinox. Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year. The time of vibrant orange, red and yellow leaves, with a little mix of green still. A time of pumpkins and chill crisp air. And the time of harvests and feasting. Not to mention Halloween, the best holiday of the year.

This is going to be a place for me to post my photos and talk about the photograph or just about my day. So this might get a little personal at times. But I think anytime an artist displays their work it’s personal. Every piece is a part of you. I’m hoping to post at least one photograph a day, but I’m not the best at keeping up with things. Procrastination loves me. So this is a new and challenging adventure for me, hence the excitement and fear.

I studied photojournalism in college, and I have an AA degree in journalism. I was supposed to get my BA, but I decided I’d had enough of school and dropped out the beginning of my senior year. Soon after dropping out of college my Canon died on me, and so for almost ten years I didn’t have a camera. It’s hard when you see everything as a potential photograph but don’t have a camera to capture such moments. Eventually a couple years ago, my husband told me to take his bonus money and find myself a camera. I think he got the hint after constantly dragging him into photography stores to look at cameras. LOL I was very resistant to the idea of digital cameras. I was a film and darkroom girl, no way was I going to use anything but analog. Well technology decided for me. I swear, all the stores only had DSLRs. So fine. This time I decided to go with a Nikon. Oh how I wish I had tens of thousands of dollars for camera equipment. I’m starting from scratch. But alas, I’m on a budget, so I purchased the Nikon D3100 with two stock lenses. My 18-55mm Nikkor and 55-200mm Nikkor. They’ve been great to have, but I’m counting the days to upgrade my camera and lenses. Not to mention all the toys on my wishlist, like a Lensbaby and CS6.

I really had to get back into the swing of things. I had to relearn my eye, and learn how to use a digital camera and Photoshop Elements. I love Elements it’s a great Photoshop to learn on. And since I live in the country, I took to photographing everything around me. I love nature and so now nature is what I photograph. I’m also trying my hand at still lifes and food photography. Sometime in the near future I’m going to start working with models. I like the fairytale aspect that can be achieved by dressing people up and sticking them in interesting locations. But for now, most of my photos that I will be sharing will be of nature, animals and food. I have three dogs, two cats and two rats, so you might see a lot of them as well.

Okay, well I guess I’ve established that I can be long winded. hahaha But I think this has been a good introduction. Perhaps you’ll see me again tomorrow. I hope so.
